Variable Frequency AC Drives (VFDs) are now recognized as the preferred method of speed control for offshore and land rigs. They provide better control, faster block speeds, lower fuel consumption, and lower maintnenance cost. IDM knows VFDs. We've been incorporating VFDs in drilling applications since 1978.

It's not a RIG, it's a SYSTEM!
In order to capitalize on the performance advantages of VFDs, the entire drilling rig must be treated as an integrated system. Drilling machinery like drawworks and top drives must be designed to match the torque and speed characteristics of AC motor drives. Unnecessary equipment is eliminated and the structure can be redesigned to take advantage of size and weight reductions of drilling machinery. Power systems can be redesigned to take advantage of increased power factor. Modern serial communication is used to tie power, control, and instrumentation together into one fully integrated system. IDM with experience in rig manufacturing, power systems, and high tech control systems is uniquely positioned to provide modern drilling rigs that take advantage of VFD technology.
